Tucked away off the east side of Highway 78 is a genuine “Old Tyme Hardware Store” with a massive inventory only the power of the Internet can provide. When driving by on the way “down the hill” to Escondido, the obscure yard is easy to miss. The small sign out front, Economizers, does not even hint at what is available in the yard and within the walls of this business

Welcome to the world of a uniquely diverse and expansive hardware store that has way more than meets the eye. From zip ties to zebra-print dish gloves, the store is reminiscent of what a small town hardware store used to be. Remember the “old days” when a trip to the hardware store meant household items as well as gardening, repair, fencing, plumbing, electrical, landscaping and all those hard-to-find parts and pieces sorely lacking in the “modern” stores? This is the place where nostalgia meets need.
“We have everything here,” said Store Manager Tyler Scribner. “With what is on the shelves, in the yard or on our Web site ... we can get you what you need.”
Scribner speaks of customers in Julian who are “in the know” about this store, the Internet site and what an economical value the combination provides.
“They ordered the picnic tables from us over our website ... and there aren’t any shipping charges to our store,” he said, so customers can pick up the online orders at Economizers.
The convenience of online ordering for the larger (or other) items not carried in the store and the free delivery to Economizers make the pickup of ordered items more economical than many other options.

Economizers Purchasing Service (EPS) may not be well-known by the casual passers-by, but nearly everyone has most likely driven past at least one sample of incredible and intricate permanent fencing that adorns the residential and business properties in and around Ramona and throughout the county.

The store is open six days a week. Online orders may be placed through the company’s Web site at www.economizers.doitbest.com. Customers will find waders, coolers, telephones, airbeds, and, oh, yes, hardware “stuff,” too.
A “heart of gold” beats within Volk, providing a service to the community of Ramona that is often seen but rarely thought about, say those who know her. Volk will not tell stories about losing her home in the Witch fire yet showing up at work to open the store for others who needed help. Nor will anything be said about a personal fight with cancer or the relapse that pressed her into the third business so her sons would be taken care of — or that a son received awards in the military.
Volk remains silent to the obstacles overcome and the victories reached on the personal side. It is about what needs to be done, who needs help and what hat is to be put on next. Volk presses on, a purveyor of the hard-to-find and continuing to build professionally installed gates. Ultimately a blessing to this growing community that still feels like a small town, Volk provides safety to the young and old alike — businesses and residents.
